Fifth Gatwick slot a Success

Aurigny’s additional Gatwick service is proving to be
extremely popular with travellers in Guernsey and the UK.
The flights, which depart the island at 0830 and leave
Gatwick at 1000, allow passengers an extra 90 minutes in
bed before leaving home to catch the flight.
“We recognised that many people catching the ‘red eye’ did
not have appointments until later in the morning and this
later traveling time is more appropriate for their needs,” says
Aurigny commercial director, Malcolm Coupar.
“The decision to include this extra slot has helped the airline
achieve 12% growth on that route in 2009, and a projected
16% by the end of April when the service will have been
running for a whole year.”
January 2010 - review of the last 12 months

When I look back at my column from 12 months ago there was little
indication that 2009 would be as turbulent a year as it turned out.
Of course the economic downturn affected all levels of society so it
would have been unlikely that airlines would escape unscathed, and
we are not out of it yet!
Willie Walsh, the chief executive of British Airways described the past 12
months as “…the most difficult year in the history of the airline industry”.
Aurigny’s profitability has been directly affected by the rise in fuel prices
and the US Dollar/Sterling exchange rates, it has also impacted on the
demand for our third ATR aircraft, which we lease to other carriers.
However, when airlines all over the world started to reduce services we
realised that we had to think about Plan B. The good news is that we
introduced two new services, Guernsey to East Midlands and Jersey
to Stansted, which have proven to be exceptionally popular, plus a fifth
daily flight to Gatwick.
Our two new ATRs have also been a fantastic investment and, on this
occasion, the exchange rates worked in our favour saving us around
£7m. The new aircraft’s fuel efficiency, cheaper maintenance costs and
extra seating will aid us greatly as we take off into the great unknown
that is 2010.
For 2009 we estimate that we carried 4% more passengers to and from
Guernsey and 9% more passengers in total compared to 2008. And
this was in a year that saw the vast majority of established carriers
downsizing significantly.
This is the perfect opportunity for me to thank loyal customers and
staff who recognise that Aurigny’s commitment to a 52-week service
and a simple and understandable internet booking system is what
Channel Islanders need and want.
Here’s to a prosperous 2010.

Christmas shopping! Yes, it’s that time again and Aurigny is delighted to present you with a different option this year. We all know about theexcellent facilities at Manchester’s Trafford Centre and Southampton’s
West Quay but have you ever considered Nottingham for your big shop?
There is more to this great city than cricket and Robin Hood and with Aurigny’s daily flights to East Midlands it is accessed easily and in comfort. The Victoria Centre is a large indoor mall and home to 120 shops and stores while Westfield Broadmarsh has over 80. The Exchange & The FH Mall has many stylish outlets gathered beneath its elegant glass vaulted roof.
The area around Low Pavement and Bridlesmith Gate is a haven for fans of designer fashions, with exclusive names rubbing shoulders with one another along the historic cobbled streets. Nottingham is the capital of the East Midlands and has one of the most sophisticated urban environments with a £200 million canal quarter, more café-bars and elegant restaurants than any comparable city and an enviable reputation for clubs, theatres, cinemas and galleries.
Of course East Midlands airport is not just handy for Nottingham but for Derby and Leicester too where there is also excellent shopping to be had. Don’t forget we do not charge for baggage which is a bonus when
retail therapy is on the agenda.
Our service between Guernsey and East Midlands has been running now since May and we have been delighted with your reaction to it. Take advantage of it this Christmas and here’s to a happy and healthy
new year. No matter where you’re going today, I hope you enjoy flying with Aurigny.

Sir Derrick Bailey, the founder of Aurigny

Sir Derrick Bailey, the founder of Aurigny has died aged ninety at his Bluestone Hill home in Alderney. One of five siblings, Sir Derrick was born at Marylebone, London in 1918 to Sir Abe Bailey, a South African politician, financier, diamond tycoon and first class cricketer, and to Mary Westenra, a prominent aviator who would later become a Dame. The young Derrick, who had a twin sister, Ann, was educated at Winchester College where he played in the cricket first eleven as a right-handed batsman.
He moved to South Africa aged 17, learnt to fly and played polo to a high standard. During the Second World War Sir Derrick served with the South African Irish Regiment and then with the South African Air Force and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for ‘gallantry’. After the war he returned to England and attended Cirencester Agricultural College and became a farmer in the Hereford area. During the annual cricket match between the college and Gloucestershire Sir Derrick caught the eye of legendary spinner, Tom Goddard, by hitting him all over the park. Within a season this seasoned amateur became captain of the county playing his last game in September 1952.
In 1968, Sir Derrick set up Aurigny Air Services after being approached by the States of Alderney. Malcolm Hart says that the cricketer, farmer, war hero and business man has left an extraordinary legacy: “Sir Derrick was a fascinating man from another time. I got to know him quite well and last year while we were planning our 40th anniversary celebrations I learned a lot about his early years and the setting up of the company. I was fascinated to learn that he was once a test-pilot, his brother married one of Winston Churchill’s daughters and Lord Kitchener was one of his godfathers.
The legacy he has left Alderney and the Channel Islands in the shape of Aurigny is quite remarkable. How many other small island communities of Alderney’s size and population could boast its own airline which employs so many people? Aurigny is one of the oldest commercial airlines in the world and it is down to Sir Derrick’s foresight, and his father’s racing colours, that ‘the little yellow plane’ has played such an important part in Channel Island life for so long.
“On behalf of all of Aurigny’s air crew and ground staff we would like to express our sadness at the news and send our condolences to Sir Derrick’s family.”

Business Plus Proving Popular !

Aurigny’s new corporate booking system, BusinessPlus, is proving to be a welcome addition to the airline’s offering to local companies, and others with interests in the islands. The online portal allows corporate users to manage their travel requirements in their own special area of Aurigny’s booking system. Commercial Director Malcolm Coupar says that special presentations to the business community have been taking place and there is great interest in the system: “Business Plus allows easy making and changing of bookings, and has great reporting tools enabling finance directors to keep close track of travel expenditure. It also gives us the opportunity to create special fares specifically for individual organisations and it gives businesses credit accounts and avoids them incurring credit and debit cards charges.”

Aurigny has had its best-ever month on its Gatwick route. Despite many companies pulling back on business travel the airline sales figures show that 13,897 chose to fly with Aurigny in May. “This is great news and confirmation that our new 08.40 departure from Guernsey is very popular with business travellers.” says Aurigny Managing Director, Malcolm Hart. “Combine that with some really attractive fares and the introduction of our two new ATR aircraft and we have a great month which is bucking market trends. “We also introduced new routes from Guernsey to East Midlands and Jersey to Stansted on 1 May and our first month has been really encouraging with our figures across the network 12% up on last year.” Ticket sales on the East Midlands service are 73% above forecast and 40% above the last time the airline operated on this route in May 2004. “We are also very pleased that we have upped our presence in Jersey” says Mr Hart. “With the reduction in other carrier’s services to London we had an idea that a reliable daily service to Stansted would be a valued alternative. In our first month of operations we are 55% above forecasts and have equaled the figures from the last time we ran this service in May 2004, when we had twice as many daily flights.”
